Rob the dog

„You could steal all my clothes, burn the place, I wouldn’t mind. But if you’d harm my children I would chase you from this world to the next and to the next. My children are the reason why I like to wake up in the morning, yeah, that’s what’s important to me.“
Anton says this and of course he doesn’t say it at the very beginning of our talk. But he says it with such a strong determination and in such an impressive way, while his arms are pointing towards the imaginary worlds, where his pursuit probably would take him, that I was deeply impressed, and I still am.
„Life is not about money. You can get rich and own a huge house. But at the end of the day we all are breathing the same air.“
Anton is a single father and together with his two kids he lives in Brighton since about 10 years now. They’ve moved from London when his son was about ready to go to school. „I’ve been working as a teacher myself and I couldn’t think of any school in London, where I wanted to send my children.“ He quit being a teacher a while before, yet. For years he had been selling vintage-clothes at Portobello Market at the same time: „And I couldn’t do both anymore.“ He still is going to Portobello Market but being 54 he suddenly thought he’s too old to stand outside his whole life. So he opened up his own store in North Laine: „Rob the dog“

My impression is that Anton looks like as if he was a good teacher: competent, disciplined and warm-hearted. It's a pity he gave up the profession.

He named his shop after the legendary parachute dog (for picture see link) from WW2. However, none of the stories about him were, apparently, true.

'Rob the dog' is doppeldeutig. It can mean Rob, der Hund, oder auch klaue von dem Hund. It took me years to realize that 'Die letzten beißen die Hunde' does not mean 'the the last ones bite the dog' (wie die Chinesen dies tun) but 'the last ones get bitten by the dog!'.

Brilliant blog – Keep up the good work, Smilla.

    Nick, you know,
I even asked him why he called his shop Rob the dog. He said "Well, it sounds better than Antons…whatever…" When I googled it I found out rob the dog is a band or a musician from Brighton, anyway I guess I wasn't to curious to find out, so thats why my search request was just "Rob the dog Brighton."
    I didn't expect a higher meaning, though.
Maybe I'll ask him via mail…

And I think you're prpbably right, that he's been a quite good teacher. Too bad, that often the wrong ones quit the job

    Danke!
